In Tribute to Doc.....

We received a lovely story of one of our rescues from several years back. It's a beautiful story. Enjoy.

'Back in the summer of 2001, I was “conned” into getting a puppy.  We found lots of puppies at one of the Petsmart Adoption events and ended up adopting a 6 week old Black Lab/German Shepherd mix male from your group who instantly became known as Doc.  The day we got him, my oldest daughter (9 at the time) said it was the “best day ever” and that she “knew it would be wonderful, but it is so much more than wonderful!” (That’s a picture of my daughter Megan and baby Doc on the day we adopted him.) I dreaded the thought of all the time it was going to take ME to potty train him, feed him, let him in, let him out and thought for sure I was getting the short end of the stick.

Doc ended up being my best friend; somehow he always knew when I didn’t feel well, was upset, and he would come and stay with me, sometimes for days.  He loved going up to the barn with me every morning and evening to feed the horses, racing up the driveway, sometimes getting distracted to chase squirrels, but he always came to the barn and waited for me.

On Labor Day, we had to put Doc down.  I had decided when he first started having seizures in February of this year, that I would know “it was time” when he no longer went up to the barn to feed the horses, and this had finally happened.  I cried non-stop once I knew it was time, trying to let him know that I loved him, but I knew he already knew that because I could see it in his eyes.  My husband and youngest daughter Anna were with me and Doc until the very end, and it’s the only time I’ve ever seen my husband cry like that in the 27 years we’ve been together.

When I am ready, I know that I’ll be looking for a dog that needs rescuing/adopting, and hopefully your group with have my next “adventure.”  Doc was a GREAT dog, and I wanted to thank you for saving him so many years ago.  I’ve attached copies of the photos I sent with my original letter to make it easier for you to post.
